Digital Color Page Volume Hits New High with Xerox iGen3 Press; New Capabilities Driving Growth across Xerox Color Line; Customers Say Color Business ``is Exploding''

CHICAGO --(Business Wire)-- Sept. 9, 2005 -- Graphic communications firms are taking digital color page volumes to unprecedented levels as Xerox Corporation (NYSE:XRX) expands profit-boosting support programs and introduces new capabilities across its high-end color line.

Today, more than 8 billion pages are being produced annually on Xerox digital production color systems worldwide, while customers using the flagship Xerox iGen3(R) Digital Production Press are set to break the 3 billion page mark this month. More than 70 iGen3 presses are printing 1 million pages or more in a single month, and more than 60 customers have multiple iGen3 presses.

The latest figures from IDC, a global provider of market intelligence, say Xerox is the leader in the 60+ pages per minute color space in the United States, with 68 percent market share in the first half of 2005. InfoTrends/CAP Ventures, an independent industry analyst firm, has forecast that the retail value of digital color print-on-demand in the United States will grow from $24.9 billion in 2004 to $50.6 billion in 2009. This represents a 15 percent compound annual growth rate.

One year after installing its first Xerox iGen3, DMI Inc. of Woburn, Mass., has now installed two more Xerox iGen3 110 presses to meet growing customer demand for personalized variable-data printing and on-demand color jobs such as brochures, marketing collaterals and direct-mail campaigns. The one-to-one marketing services provider is printing more than 1 million pages a month on its first iGen3 press, and it expects to average more than 500,000 pages a month on each of the additional digital presses.

"Our business is exploding. We are profiting from digital color, and the Xerox iGen3 presses are allowing us to continue to move into more revenue-generating full-color, one-to-one and cross-media marketing campaigns that are achieving significant increases in ROI for our customers," said Mark Ellis, vice president, sales and marketing, DMI Inc. "We are already looking forward to our fourth iGen3 press."

Toppan Printing Company America Inc., a wholly-owned subsidiary of Toppan Printing Co. Ltd., the second largest printing company in the world, operates two Xerox iGen3 presses at its sprawling plant in Somerset, N.J. According to Gavin Jordan-Smith, director of digital communications, the iGen3 presses have transformed the company's business and led to significant growth, customer retention, new customer generation and profit.

"Within six months of adding digital print services to complement our traditional offset work, we secured 85 new clients and generated a 20 percent increase in profits," said Jordan-Smith.

Quincy Allen, president of the Xerox Production Systems Group, points to the proven market performance of the iGen3 press, coupled with customer support programs, as key drivers of steadily increasing digital color page volumes.

"The combination of image quality, speed, reliability and paper-handling capabilities of the iGen3 press make it unsurpassed in the marketplace," said Allen. "But our focus goes beyond the technology to include intensive volume-building support and marketing programs designed to help ensure a superior - and profitable - customer experience. At the same time, we continue to enhance the capabilities of our color line."

Customer business development resources in Xerox's ProfitAccelerator(TM) portfolio - the industry's most comprehensive collection of knowledge, training and support programs - ensure that Xerox customers' digital investment will be successful. The portfolio includes sales and marketing, creative and design, application development and financial tools.

These successes and more are being showcased at Print 05 in Chicago this week, the industry's largest and most comprehensive trade show in the world this year. Other announcements are:

-- DocuSP includes IPDS on iGen3 and DocuColor 7000 and 8000 presses.

-- A new FreeFlow Scanner 665E is available for the DocuColor 7000 and 8000.

-- Xerox has enhanced its highlight color products and expanded its remote services capabilities.

Full-Color IPDS Available on iGen3 Press

The new Xerox FreeFlow(TM) DocuSP(R) 5.0 print controller includes a native, full-color IPDS (Intelligent Printer Data Stream(R)) printing option on the Xerox iGen3 and DocuColor(R) 7000 and 8000 Digital Presses. IPDS processes transactional documents such as checks, invoices and statements.

Full-color IPDS printing is a growing application in the transactional printing market, and print providers around the globe are seeing the added value of full-color and integrated marketing messages in their transactional documents. Competitive digital color presses don't support native IPDS printing and use software that translates the IPDS data stream before it reaches the printer. This translation can result in a slower printing process and a higher likelihood of mistakes on the printed piece.

Scanning Solution Improves Customer Productivity

The Xerox FreeFlow(TM) Scanner 665E is a stand-alone scanning solution for DocuColor 7000 and 8000 customers such as quick printers and in-plant print shops needing to have hardcopy input. It can quickly and easily scan hardcopy pages at 40 color pages per minute at 600 x 600 dots-per-inch resolution and 60 color pages per minute at 400 x 400 dpi, producing professional-quality images with minimal operator involvement.

Print professionals simply load the pages into the document handler and click the scan button. The scanner virtually eliminates all prepress activities related to image quality by separately processing photos, halftones, text and line art within a page, ensuring each is differentiated and printed with optimal image quality. Competitive scanning systems rely on manual image editing, dramatically slowing the production process. The FreeFlow Scanner 665E is available through the Xerox direct sales force, resellers, Xerox dealers and concessionaires. U.S. pricing is $21,000 including the scanner, PC and a monitor, and software.

Upgraded Highlight Color Systems

Xerox enhanced its DocuTech(R) HighLight Color Systems line, giving customers more flexibility with the documents they produce by offering a fourth color option: royal blue. Joining the current palette of red, green and blue, the new color gives customers another option when they produce newsletters, reports, invoices and statements where highlight color is used to focus reader attention on critical information. Many businesses that have a royal blue logo -- including health insurance companies -- can now maintain brand recognition by printing documents including royal blue without the cost of full-color toner coverage.

Unlike competitive products, Xerox HighLight Color Systems -- which print 128, 155 and 180 pages per minute -- increase efficiency by maintaining top speed when printing highlight colors. Customers can swap colors in and out of the system in as little as five minutes, and highlight color toner is only slightly more expensive than black.

Expanded Remote Services

Building on the success of its remote services program for all iGen3 press and Xerox Nuvera(TM) products, Xerox is now offering Web monitoring and maintenance support for DocuColor 7000 and 8000 Digital Presses. Xerox's remote services offerings connect a Xerox specialist with Xerox equipment through the Internet. They help customers identify potential printing problems and deliver a quick and accurate diagnosis through real-time data analysis, enabling maximum uptime and productivity. Currently, 95 percent of Xerox iGen3 customers and 75 percent of Xerox Nuvera customers have chosen this service.

In its Print 05 booth, Xerox will conduct live demonstrations of its remote services capabilities through connections with a Xerox iGen3 press, a Xerox Nuvera Digital Production System, a DocuColor 8000 and a DocuTech HighLight Color System.

Xerox boasts the industry's largest and most successful digital color production printing portfolio, with products ranging in speed from 40 to 110 pages per minute. Products include the DocuColor 240/250 Digital Printer/Copier; DocuColor 5252, 6060, 7000 and 8000 Digital Presses; and the Xerox iGen3 110 Digital Production Press.
