Infima Unveils JPACK Recompression Software

Infima Technologies reportedly has developed a new recompression software solution called “JPACK.”

Company officials say the solution can reduce bandwidth and storage costs without any need for additional infrastructure.

Infima says it develops and markets bit-level recompression solutions for popular file formats based on patent-pending general data compression algorithm.

The advent of social networking sites has resulted in increased usage of photo files that users share with one another and those sites do face an acute problem of storing and managing those files. They also have to enhance user experience.

Infima claims that their new solution can help sites that deal with social networking and online archiving. Their technology can provide faster compression and decompression of JPEG files.

According to Avshalom Cohen, vice president of marketing and sales at Infima, image online archiving is one of the fastest growing areas of Internet usage.

The JPACK solution rapidly generates significant JPEG recompression ratios that enable us to decrease upload time instead of adding latency, Cohen said.

“We have found that this novel approach is much more compelling to vendors, as compared to alternative solutions that have been proposed to them,” Cohen said. “The solution is transparent to users, enables instant savings of millions of dollars in physical storage requirements, floor space and expensive server-cooling systems, and hundreds of terabytes of storage reduction and power saving opportunities. With no additional infrastructure or hardware to be installed, the cost saving can be felt immediately and the positive effect on the environment is a welcome added benefit.”

One example of Infima’s technology is what’s widely known as a “Zip file,” a compressed archive of multiple files. If you try to zip a zip file, it won’t shrink any further. Infima will identify a zip block content, extract each block data.

Here’s how the company diagrams its technology:

For example, Photobucket, the image storage and sharing solution provider, holds 6.5 billion images and Facebook (News - Alert), the social network, manage 600 terabytes of users’ images.

These companies need to update their existing tools in order to provide users who expect faster upload speeds for their photos and more storage per user. They do also invest millions of dollars for that purpose but Infima says their solution does not require any hardware upgrades and can provide that faster uploads and high storage companies are looking for.

This new JPACK solution can be seamlessly and transparently integrated into vendors’ own systems, providing rapid, high-ratio compression paths. It also provides both significant latency reduction commonly associated with image uploading and Jpeg storage and bandwidth cost saving to image online vendors.
